Letter dated Nov 12 1853 from George Baxter to his father describing the wedding of his daughter Elizabeth to William Oliver

11 and 12 Northampton Square
November 12 / 53

Dear Father
The marriage was announced in the Times of yesterday, the 11th, in the list of marriages which was of course sent by Mr William Oliver’s clerk.
My brother William and I not being on friendly terms, I could not think of communicating on any subject with him.
You and mother wishing to know the particulars of the marriage I with pleasure send a slight account. In the first place 21 persons sat down to breakfast and every person was delighted with the wedding entertainment. Elizabeth has had valuable presents flow in like the tides in your Newhaven Harbour. Silver alone she had upwards of One Hundred Pounds worth presented and the most costly ornaments also among which was the good book the Bible presented by Mrs Oliver 4to bound in the first style in Morocco and clear print the best edition.
Mrs Harrild presents her with a splendid teapot and milk X in silver. Robert presented her with a set of tea things beautifully painted. Horton, Thomas the family of Oliver and Co sent each their presents Mary and myself gave the night before her marriage a purse in pearl, silver mounted containing 20 sovereigns and a card case the same description containing a £50 note.
The square was all alive, and Elizabeth certainly never looked better, her bridal dress being very elegant, lady like, and not showy. There were 6 carriages with beautiful horses including Mrs Harrild’s.
The marriage took place at St Pancras Church Mr Oliver’s parish (a beautiful church) in the New Road.
The following are the particulars. On the 10th inst at St Pancras Church by the Revd Thomas Dale M.A. who attended specially on the occasion, William eldest son of Mr William Oliver of Dunhill Row Finsbury and Claremont Terrace Pentonville to Elizabeth eldest daughter of Mr George Baxter of Northampton Square.
There were about 300 persons present at the church and on their going out they formed in 2 lines and flowers being strewed before them. The breakfast supplied by Burch of Cornhill – 2 men servants and a footman attended. At half past 3 o’clock the Bride and Bridegroom drove off in the best style attended by a footman in black of course, they left in very slight mourning. We had a letter from Elizabeth yesterday morning stating that she and her dear husband had arrived at the Dover Castle Hotel Dover after a pleasant ride by the Express Train and occupied the same apartments that we had on our return from the continent.
Yesterday the 11th we expect they crossed the channel for Calais and there stop for the day – and this day the 12th proceed by early train to Paris. Early this morning the cards were sent to all parties connected with the marriage and we shall send cake on Monday to Ann, the Manns and Mrs Baxter at Horsham also to Mother, it is not the fashion to send cake generally only to nearest relations. We have three wedding cakes, a good size one is to go to Elizabeth on her return.
I intended to have written to Mother today to tell her particulars – yesterday I could not do it – the preparations for the marriage have been going on full swing for the last month – she has an excellent supply of clothes all of the best quality; including presents from ourselves, money, &c. I have paid upwards of £400 for her outfit. We have I assure you started her in that way which would not disgrace any family.
Yours with love
G Baxter
