Print: Baxter CL 346 - This shows a dense ‘jungle’ image. When Baxter is talking of ‘Indians reposing’ he must be talking about the inhabitants of the West Indies, possibly British Guiana until the 1950’s, now Guyana, or another of the British territories of that period. A similar small print by Kronheim has the title ‘Grenada in the Antilles’ one of the smaller Caribbean islands a few hundred miles off the coast of Guyana
This copy is signed in the water, on the left, "Published Feby. 25, 1856 by G. Baxter, Proprietor & Patentee, London," Although there is a rarer version dated Nov 1855.
Baxter’s 1860 auction catalogue states that it “from a drawing made on the spot”. Baxter doesn’t credit an artist but I do have a painting of this subject, four times the size of the print signed, but by an unknown artist, quite possibly what Baxter used as the basis for his print.
The print was produced from eleven blocks, and was originally sold at 10s. 6d.
Date: 1856
Size (cm ht x w): 61 cm x 49.5 cm overall frame size
State: On Baxter’s original stamped mount, over mounted in blue with gold edging and then cream, a very popular 1920’s style of mounting which would be hard to replicate today, in a vintage gilt frame
Condition: The frame has just been stripped down and the glass is all cleaned, some loss of colour but still very appealing, light staining to over mount, priced accordingly. Some of the images are of the print unframed during cleaning of the glass
As with all our larger framed items we can’t guarantee the glass in transit, no carrier will insure it. I will tape the glass and pad with extra cardboard and plenty of bubble wrap etc so should all arrive in perfect condition. If you prefer we can post without the glass or unframed, or I can put the glass behind the backboard, away from the print please let me know.
