Print: Baxter CL 290 - Signed in the bottom centre, "Published July 19th, 1856, by G. Baxter, Proprietor & Patentee, London,"
It shows a Hop Garden or Hop fields – and the harvesting of the hops. Victorian hop fields, particularly in Kent, were important, labour-intensive, often functioning as a 6-week "working holiday" for thousands of poor East Londoners. Families would travel annually, living in rustic huts to hand-pick hops, creating a unique social gathering that bridged urban poverty and rural life. This often continuing until the 1960s.
It was produced from twelve zinc blocks and was originally sold at 1s. 6d.
