Walking towards the court room from 'Grace' showing the Baxter collection at Lewes Town Hall
We must have all seen the odd Baxter print on the Television, The Bridesmaid or The Lovers Letter box showing up in the corner of a room in some period drama but rarely do we get to see a whole collection!
‘Grace’ is a fictional police series based in Brighton starring John Simm in the title role. ITV recently released series 5 and in the concluding 4th episode, the obligatory court case is heavily featured. The ‘court room’ used was actually Lewes Town Hall. Lewes, being the town in Sussex where Baxter was born, holds a substantial collection of Baxter prints including some very unique items like Baxter’s original patents.
In one part of the program you can see the two main characters climb the stairs and enter what Lewes Town Hall call their Baxter corridor where many prints are displayed in the frames that were all prepared for the substantial Lewes Baxter exhibition of 2007 in which the society was heavily involved. As they climbed the stairs you can see, be it very briefly, Baxter’s Large Queen (Victoria, Queen of Great Britain, India, etc.) and then as they enter the corridor about 30 – 40 more framed Baxter prints. Most were all slightly blurred with the camera (rightly?) focusing on the characters but you can easily make out a pair of ‘Te Po’s’ in one frame, ‘Dover Coast’, ‘So Tired’, ‘Me Warm Now’ and a ‘Puss Napping’ below a ‘So Nice’ in the background as they stop and talk for some 45 seconds.
For anyone visiting the area it is always worth popping in and asking to look at the prints. Although the people I knew have most probably all now moved on I would like to think the new staff would be just as helpful. The main ‘Baxter corridor’ is used for Weddings and the like so is not always available to view.
The program is currently still available on ITV X and can be found via the link below. You might need to register an account to be able to view the whole episode, the scene in question is around 1 hour 10 mins in.
Otherwise I show the 'important bits' above without sound.
