Print: Baxter CL 230 – A ‘pull’ taken from Baxter’s engraved steel plate with out the added colour blocks so doesn’t show the sepia design around the oval formed from that colour block.

In theory the pull could have been taken by anyone who had the steel plate but as we know a very accurate history of the plates the choices are very limited. They could have been taken by Le Blond circa 1868 or Mockler circa 1893 although his impressions are always on large sheets and with the registration holes covered. Owens bought them in the early 1920’s and he had them all framed so they couldn’t be printed from again and have been in Baxter collectors hands ever since so Baxter or Le Blond are the only really options for who actually took this impression and as Le Blond never printed a full colour version of this Baxter seem the most likely.

A half-length oval portrait taken from a miniature on ivory from Romney's picture painted in 1789.
