Print: Baxter CL 9 – Printed exclusively for two books by J. M. Moffat ‘The Book of Science’ and ‘The Boy's Book of Science’. I have never seen a copy of the later and wonder whether this was just the same book misdescribed many years ago.?
The print is unusual in that it is a folding plate, one sheet of paper but with an additional piece affixed to the back to allow it to be bound in the book, please see images.
Baxter moved addresses on 23rd March 1835, the year this print was produced so can be found with his earlier King Square address, as in this copy, and others with the Charterhouse Square address.
The book says: "The 'Modifications of Clouds' are distinguished into three principal and distinct formations and four composite kinds, which, together with some varieties, are represented in the accompanying plate." The simple forms are Cirrus, Cumulus and Stratus. The composite are the Cirro Cumulus, Cirro Stratus, Cumulo Stratus and the Nimbus.”
Under the print is the title, and: (1) Linear Cirrus; (2) Mare's Tail Cirrus; (3) Cymoid Cirrus; (4) Cirro-Cumulus; (5) Cirro-Stratus; (6) Mottled Cirro-Stratus; (7) Cumulus; (8) Cumulo-Stratus; (9) Nimbus; and below that "Engraved and Printed in Oil Colours by G. Baxter, 29, King Square, London.".
