Print: Baxter - CL 133 – This is Baxter’s first set of prints designed for use by the needle manufacturers. They were intended to be cut into singles and stuck on to small boxes containing needles. Originally this set were printed in a long strip of 12 prints and were on the same printing plate as three small views.
Most probably shortly after, as sales took off, they were amended into a sheet of 10 prints, five on top of the other as per his later needlebox sets. Two of the prints were omitted for this amended set and all the titles etc were removed.
Here we have a strip of prints from the original set as the titles are still complete. Above the prints is engraved “Designed, Engraved, Printed, and Published by G. Baxter, Patentee, 11, Northampton Square, 1850 (Entered at Stationers' Hall)," and then the title of each print: Balmoral, The Coronation (a miniature of part of No. 129), The Duchess of Sutherland (a miniature of part of No. 129, with a different background), Her Majesty delivering her speech and Buckingham Palace. Interestingly I have seen examples of the complete sheet including the set of twelve in institutional collections but have yet to find a complete uncut sheet of the amended plate
Size (cm ht x w): 4.2 x 2.6 (each print excluding titles)
State: Unmounted – a se-tenant strip of four plus a single with title above each print showing that these are from the original plate of twelve prints
Condition: Very good
