Print: This print shows a ‘gallery’, a high viewing point, in a tree in the front of the Golden Grove Public House, St Ann’s Hill, Chertsey. I can’t find details of the history of the pub or the gallery but have found references to it in Black’s Guide to Surrey of 1861. The Golden Grove is still there today and is a thriving pub / restaurant
Under the print is the title, to the left, the printer J M Kronheim & Co and to the right London. It was published for use in an annual pocket book, Le Souvenir for 1861. I have found an uncoloured earlier version of the print by W Backsell at the British Museum after a painting by W Havell. Kronheim was obviously giving instruction to print from that plate in colour so he would have cut the colour blocks etc and then (as seems to have been the norm for this) put his name as the printer – which is of course is now totally correct.
