1449 Gems Of The Crystal Palace No. 1 The Exterior
Print: Baxter - CL 191 Gems of the Crystal Palace No. 1, The Exterior.
Signed on the left "Published June 10, 1854 [this was the date of the opening], by G. Baxter, London, Proprietor & Patentee,"
Baxter’s 1860 auction catalogue says: "The view is taken from the Dulwich Road."
Stated as No. 1 in the series – the rare Pompeian Court was No 2 and Crystal Palace & Gardens was advertised as No 3. No 4 The Assyrian (Egyptian) Court was never published so the series was not finished? Perhaps people’s minds were by now too much occupied with the Crimean War?
On the steel plate under the image is engraved "Gems of the Crystal Palace, No. 1. The Exterior. Engraved, Printed, & Published, June 10th, 1854, by the Proprietor, George Baxter, the Inventor & Patentee of Oil Colour Picture Printing, 11 & 12, Northampton Square London (Entered at Stationers' Hall)." The print was produced from a plate and eleven blocks, and was originally sold at 3s.
Quite a hard to find print and this is only the 2nd copy we have had on the website in the last 18 years.
Size (cm ht x w): 13.4 x 29.7
State: On old white card
Condition: Excellent colours, damage to bottom right corner, please see image. Priced accordingly but our view is that as Baxter was a colour printer getting a copy with very good colours is by far better than getting an undamaged but faded copy
