1430 Crucis Abbey
Print: Baxter - CL 316 - Crucis Abbey or Valle Crucis Abbey lies about 2 miles outside of Llangollen in North Wales. This print was used as an illustration to Scripture Pocket Book 1851 and also issued separately by Baxter.
This abbey is about two miles from Llangollen. It stands in a meadow at the foot of a high hill called Bron Vawr. The abbey was a house of Cistercians, founded about 1200 by Madoc ap Gryffydd Maclor, Lord of Dinas Bran. It was dissolved, along with most other monasteries, in 1537 and fell into disrepair. In the 18th century it was re-roofed and used as a farmhouse although many other the monastic features remained.
The ruins are still there today and under national care by Cadw
