Print: Baxter - CL 305 – This shows the ‘famous’ chain pier built originally built in 1823 and was ultimately destroyed by a storm in 1896.
It is interesting print as the printing plate started out as Baxter‘s print, “Near Folkestone, mid-day”. That print had presumably finished it’s useful life and the, quite plain, sea view was adapted adding the pier and the Brighton buildings to make this print
Baxter spent part of his early life at Brighton and the first known work associated to him was his drawing of Brighton Chain Pier in 1824. Originally sold at 6d.
