Circassian Lady at the Bath (1015)

Print: Le Blond Baxter. Originally published by Baxter as CL 344 in 1850 and reprinted by Le Blond after Baxter’s death.
It is from a painting by Wingael which please see our research site (linked from the home page) to see the original painting. When Baxter published this print it was very topical. The Circassians had, for more than half a century, been fighting the Russian and it had attracted the attention of the world. In 1859, the Muscovites had captured their Prophet Chief Schamyl. Circassian women were famed for their beauty, and chiefly supplied the seraglios or harems of Persia and Turkey. The lack of Baxter’s signature in the plate bottom right is enough to confirm this as a Le Blond Baxter.
